Crowdfunding helps make people’s lives better, whether it is by allowing people to donate for supporting others’ lives or whether it allows a person to fulfil their dreams. Be it by helping them get financial support for their dream business, to get the desired education, or compete in an event as grand as the Olympics — crowdfunding has been highly beneficial for people in many ways.

Here are five sportspeople who have seen the power of crowdfunding:

1. Yuki Bhambri

Tennis ace Yuki Bhambri is India’s example of how crowdfunding helped him get the support necessary to appear and compete in international competitions. While there is no shortage of passion and talent, the lack of finances was a threat for Bhambri. However, with the help of crowdfunding, he raised the 20 Lacs necessary, enabling him to shine even more on international tennis courts and showcase his talent for all to see.

2. Zhang Beiwen

American badminton star Zhang Beiwen also used the global crowdfunding platform to raise US $15,000 to sponsor her expenses associated with competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. According to Beiwen, the sport gets “little to no funding” in the US, compelling her to look for avenues outside of it to raise the necessary funds.

3. Brittany Bowe

American speed skater Brittany Bowe participated in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi with the help of crowdfunding. This is another case where an athlete had not received sufficient support, forcing them to look for financial support themselves and resolve their financial issues themselves. However, thankfully, plenty of donors wanted to help her realize her dream and full-heartedly donated money to help her compete in the event.

4. P. T. Usha

Indian sports hero P. T. Usha also resorted to crowdfunding to raise funds for students in her institute, the ‘Usha School Of Athletics’. In the absence of sponsors and the need to support hundreds of students bursting with talent, Usha turned to the general public. This worked immensely in her favour, with the institute raising as much as Rs. 30 Lakhs to support the children and their talent.

5. The Irish Men’s Hockey team

The Irish men’s hockey team is another success story, where the team collected over €50,000 through donations from fans and supporters. Initially shared with close friends and family, the campaign found its way into the general public and a total of 430 donors invested in fulfilling the dream of the hardworking team. Through this campaign, the team is recognised as the biggest success story in crowdfunding at Rio 2016.
