Crowdfunding increased in popularity in India with the advent of the internet; therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if most people thought of it as an online phenomenon. However, the history of crowdfunding in our country goes back over a hundred years. There were numerous instances of people pooling their money and resources to fight for freedom. Here are a few examples:

1913: Crowdfunding Saves Thousands Of Indian Labourers

In the 1900s, the Natal region of South Africa had a large colony of Indian labourers working in various industries run by the British. Most labourers were forced to work under contract or had to pay a tax of 3 pounds to the government annually. Soon, the labourers decided to strike. As the movement grew to 16,000 people, the money needed to sustain it was sourced through crowdfunding. Local Indians came forward to support the movement and donated as much as they could. The outcome? The government repealed the tax and made other significant changes.

1921: The Fundraiser That United India

Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s death in 1920 intensified the Non-Cooperation Movement. The Tilak Swaraj Fund was announced across all provinces with its aim of education and contribution to the freedom struggle. The goal was to raise one crore – an unimaginable amount at that time. However, funds poured in from all across the country and the Tilak Swaraj Fund successfully raised 1 crore. From common men and women to business owners, people from different states in India all united for this one cause and made this fundraiser a success.

1945: No Stone Left Unturned For The Freedom Struggle

It was towards the end of the freedom struggle that we saw what was probably the most notable example of fundraising. To support the Indian National Army’s war efforts, people went above and beyond by donating jewellery, valuables and even mortgaging their homes. Donations even came in from Rangoon (now Yangon)!

Crowdfunding has been instrumental throughout history in driving great efforts directed at lofty goals. Thanks to technology and the generosity of donors, it continues to drive change worldwide.
