Growing old is an inevitable part of life, and we will all get there someday. But not all will have the privilege of growing old gracefully. Life becomes harder as we age- consider the 140 million people above the age of 60 in India today. More than half of the people aged 65 and above require assistance with everyday activities such as getting in and out of bed, eating, bathing, dressing, and using the toilet. Our culture has always valued the elderly and ensured that as parents get older, the children will be around to help them with the rest of their journey.

Sadly, there are still thousands of elderlies abandoned even today. Making matters worse is the prevalence of elder abuse. Abuse need not only be physical; it can happen in the form of neglect, psychological/emotional, sexual, financial, loss of dignity, and abandonment. Going by the numbers, at least 5% of elders reported experiencing abuse in 2020, and more than half of those surveyed have experienced neglect.

With so many in need of some basic care that would significantly improve their day-to-day lives, there is much we can do to make it better for them. Here are some ways you can make a difference today:

Volunteer in your community to help the elderly

Regardless of where you live, there will most certainly be an elder nearby that can use your assistance. Be more mindful of their needs every day. Drop-in now and then to ask if they need help with anything. Help them carry groceries from the store. Spend some time in the evening with them, offer to water their plants or cook for them if you can. Small things make a difference.

Volunteer at an old age home

Eldercare facilities are always in need of volunteers who can help. Please spend some time with these elders as they seldom have visitors. Be available to assist in activities such as hospital visits or other programs that help make their lives better.

Build a support group that can spring into action

Network with like-minded individuals to build a support group in your community. You can establish a new chapter in other communities to support the elders in the area. Having a group of volunteers who can spring into action immediately will come in handy during times of need.

Donate to NGOs on crowdfunding platforms

Crowdfunding platforms like Donatekart partner with a number of NGOs who are giving abandoned elderlies a safe home. By donating here, you can ensure that they’re given the care they need during their last years.

At Donatekart, we’re constantly striving to curate the most relevant and engaging content just for you. If you loved reading this, then 5 NGO’s in india you can volunteer will grab your attention too.
