“People tell me why is it that only I can see these injured, malnourished animals. But I just do! And once I have spotted them, it is difficult for me to not look after them. They’re so innocent and without us helping them, they’re left to die on the streets. My heart breaks seeing them in such pain,” - Aman Walia, Founder, Aman’s Animal Rehabilitation Foundation (AARF).
This Naigaon-based animal shelter was started in 2008 but its seeds were sown when Aman’s daughter, Simran, brought home an injured pup, Dodo. Aman was not so sure of taking him in but she couldn’t say no. Soon they started feeding and taking care of 4 more dogs. Currently, the number has increased to 350+ dogs in need. Their shelter is home to dogs, cats, chickens, turtles and even pigeons.
They’re working tirelessly to look after animals in need
Aman says that although she had grown up with animals, she wasn’t ready to take in any more animals in her home. The ones she had, didn’t survive and Aman was scared that she might not be able to save the new ones too.
“But my kids convinced me and I am so glad that they did. Now, I can’t think of my life without these animals. There are visually challenged senior dogs, dogs that have been left paralysed after serious accidents. We try to give them the best of everything. Naigaon doesn’t have proper veterinarians and people often call us for help. On a daily basis, we get over 25 calls and Simran and the volunteers go to rescue them.”
The shelter home always ran on the donations of kind-hearted souls but the pandemic has made the situation worse. With no regular donations, it has become very difficult for Aman and Simran to look after the animals in need.
Support Aman so that she can build a safe for the animals
Despite their constant financial crunch, Aman is not ready to compromise on the well-being of these animals. She needs your help to create a safe and secured home for the animals. She believes that a little kindness will go a long way and hence is making a heartfelt request to all the animal-lovers out there.
“They’re my family and with your support, I will be able to feed them and give them a life they deserve. I have seen people hitting them, causing them so much pain. If we are not there for them then these helpless animals have nowhere to go. You can help us by donating construction materials and food for the animals so that we can give them a safe home.”
About the NGO: Started in 2008 in Naigaon, Maharashtra, this shelter home for animals is run by a mother-daughter duo, Aman and Simran. They feed over 350+ strays and provide a safe home to over 85 animals in need.
