“There has been no electricity for days, we are somehow managing with kerosene but even that is getting over now. We don’t even have candles with us now. We have been eating just once a day but we don’t know how long we can continue like this,” - a desperate villager from Darrang district in Assam.

In what many are calling one of the worst floods in the last 35 years in Assam, over 47 lakhs people have been impacted in 32 out of the 36 districts in the state in the last one week. Reports say that the dangerous floods have claimed around 71 lives in the state. Many more are missing too. There has been a tremendous loss of property as well - the condition is dire and people are in urgent need of support.

    How severe is the situation?

According to the meteorological department, Assam has recorded 109% excessive rainfall this month – about 528.5 millimetres of actual rainfall until June 19 against the normal 252.8 millimetres for June. Some also believe that heavy rain in neighbouring Bhutan and the release of water from hydroelectric projects for the acute floods. Whatever the cause, the suffering of the common man seems to be never-ending.

“While Assam faces floods almost every year, the intensity that we are seeing right now is something that we haven’t seen in many years. In less than a month’s time, Darrang has been hit by the floods - the situation is getting worse! Over 100 villages in the district are suffering. Thousands of people are being forced to leave their homes at midnight, they have taken refuge in the school buildings but these families have nothing to eat,” says Rajib Kalita, Executive Director, Association of Social and Humane Activist (ASHA).

ASHA is an NGO based out of the Udalgiri district of Assam and was established in 2018. Since their inception, they have been doing phenomenal work towards the upliftment of the poor needy people for their education, food, shelter, clothing, health and other emergency requirements. They have also been helping the underprivileged get education and spreading awareness about the environment. Even during the pandemic, ASHA has been instrumental in supporting the daily wagers and others in need.

    How can you help?

“Just a few months ago, Assam saw another flood and with the help of Donatekart and many kind donors, we were able to give dry ration kits to around 1200 people. But this time, the need is much more and dire. We want to give them dry ration and hygiene kits consisting of soaps, toothpaste, toothbrush, detergent powder etc. We need your help for that.”

Lakhs of people have been rendered homeless by the Assam floods. While the government and the army are working very hard to support these people in need, this is the time when we, commoners, need to stand for each other and extend a helping hand to all these people suffering in pain. Donate today and make a difference.
