“A few years ago, we got a rescue call for an old man who was lying by the side of the road, too tired even to get up. When we reached the location, we saw maggots crawling out of the open wounds on his legs. We immediately brought him to our old age home and after some initial investigation, we discovered that Khan saab was a freedom fighter! His family had abandoned him and now he is struggling to survive even a single day,” - Shashank Goswami, Founder, Adharshila Old Age Home.

Shashank and his team of volunteers looked after him with utmost care and gave him the necessary medical attention that he needed. Soon, Khan saab could walk on his own legs and lived a happy life in the old age home till he breathed his last. Shashank says he feels blessed taking care of such elderly in need. He wants to continue doing this work with your support.

These residents are no different from my own parents - I want to give them a good life

Shashank started this old age home in 2014 in Prayagraj. Situated on the banks of river Yamuna and also close to the holy Triveni Sangam, Prayagraj attracts a lot of tourists around the year. The religious significance of this place is also one of the main reasons why many old people come to spend their final years in this city.

“While some come here in search of a peaceful and spiritual life others are not so lucky. Their own family members have abandoned them in this city. But both these groups of people have no proper place to stay and are often forced to beg on the streets for a morsel of food. It is heartbreaking to see them suffer like this and that is why I started this old age home.”

Adharshila Old Age Home started with only 5 residents and now they’re home to 105 elderly who have no one to take care of them. Every day, they’re given warm meals, clean bed sheets, necessary medicine, and lots of love and affection. Their happy faces and grateful eyes are Shashank’s biggest inspiration.

One of their primary needs is that of an ambulance. Shashank points out that an ambulance is an absolute necessity for them. Right now they have to depend on e-rickshaws to rescue the elderly or to take them to the hospitals.

“It is very uncomfortable for these old people to sit in the e-rickshaw and travel some distance - they have back pain, arthritis, or are sometimes too weak to continue sitting for longer periods. An ambulance will be really helpful. Apart from this, we also need a regular supply of groceries to feed our residents and hygiene materials like diapers, bedsheets, etc to give them a comfortable life.”

About the NGO: Founded by Shashank Goswami in 2014 in Prayagraj, Adharshila Old Age Home is now a safe place for 105 abandoned elderly. They’re like one big family where all their needs are being taken care of. Shashank and his dedicated team of volunteers look after them with utmost care and give them the necessary medical attention.
