In The Harsh Winters Of Himachal, Help Dipala Look After Hundreds Of Animals In Her Care

    Project

“They have called me crazy. They have burnt down my house, trying to harm the animals and stop me from rescuing them. But I have not given up. I started this journey 31 years ago and my aim is to give these animals a safe and happy home. They’re innocent and helpless, they can’t even express their pain - working for them is what makes me most happy” - 66 YO Dipala Chauhan, Founder, Heaven’s Corner.

Dipala had come to Pujarli, a small village 110 km from Shimla to look after her ancestral property. It was during this time, that Dipala noticed the atrocities that the animals had to face. The cows and mules that are used for setting up orchards are beaten and chased away from home. Their legs are cut and they are left on the cliff from where if they tried coming back, they would fall. The condition of the dogs was nothing better. That’s when Dipala decided to work for these animals.

Despite threats and challenges, Dipala has been fighting for the well-being of thousands of animals

Dipala’s day begins at the crack of dawn, marked by a heartfelt prayer to the Almighty, followed by the nurturing of the animals at Heaven's Corner. This sanctuary serves as a haven for creatures who have only known pain and suffering, providing a home for over 200 animals. She mentions how, through all these years, she has never had much support except from some of the kind-hearted souls. But that didn’t stop her from rescuing over 3500 animals in need

“People tie their mouths and limbs and throw them on the roads- little puppies, old and sick cows - they have no sympathy for anyone! I have found them in terrible conditions. Cows have been thrown from cliffs with their 1-day-old calf, a few-days-old puppy almost on the verge of being drowned in a river - the cruelties will shock you. I have also seen some heartbreaking accident cases where a car ran over a dog deliberately and broke her back. Imagine the pain in which the poor animal must be in…” - Dipala gets emotional talking about her innumerable rescues.

But her real challenge is looking after these sick and injured animals and giving them a more comfortable life. Dipala works tirelessly to give them nutritious food, necessary medicines, and a loving home. The winter months are especially difficult because of the harsh weather conditions. Dipala has to struggle to get fodder for the cattle from nearby states like Punjab. She doesn’t have a full-fledged team and even at this age, she works around the clock to ensure these animals are well-fed and taken care of.

“When I see how cruel human beings can be to these innocent beings, my heart shudders in fear. People have even come to me telling me that I am spreading filth and diseases by looking after these animals. They have tried poisoning them. Now, my only aim is to build a safe home for the cows and dogs in my care. They deserve nothing but the best.”

These are my children, please help me save these poor animals

For over three decades, Dipala Chauhan has dedicated her life to caring for the vulnerable animals in her community. However, each passing day brings increasing challenges to this demanding task of animal rescue. The urgency is greater than ever, and Dipala wishes to save many more animals in need. While she has high hopes for the younger generation and believes they are going to make a real difference, the situation is particularly challenging in this remote village of Himachal. There is a glaring lack of awareness about animal welfare and with no one else to turn to, these animals rely on her unwavering commitment.

Besides dog food, medicines, and fodder, Dipala is in dire need of construction materials, which will help her build a permanent home for these abandoned creatures, providing them with the security and care they deserve. Dipala is a lifeline for thousands of animals in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh - support her mission by donating generously.

About the NGO: Heaven’s Corner was founded in a small hamlet 110 km from Shimla by Dipala Chauhan. For the last 31 years, she has been working for the welfare of injured and abandoned animals - she has saved over 3500 animals. A true animal lover, Dipala is a ray of hope for countless cows and dogs who have faced terrible atrocities. Despite threats and challenges, she is on a mission to build a kinder world.
