Born Visually Impaired, Ashwini Is Determined To Help Kids Like Her Get Quality Education

    Project

“We have a long way to go before people with disabilities are given the same consideration as others, but we’re taking the first steps to create a better world at Belaku Academy. Here we have children with visual impairments and children without impairments, and they all co-exist perfectly well. It’s heartwarming to see little children helping each other, playing with each other and truly supporting one another - regardless of their physical abilities and their backgrounds. If children can be so accepting, why can’t we?” - Ashwini Angadi, Founder, Ashwini Angadi Trust

Being visually impaired herself, Ashwini was determined to help children with disabilities. She started the Belaku Academy under the Ashwini Angadi Trust in 2016 to give free education to visually impaired and intellectually challenged children from rural areas. Today, she’s the beacon of hope and light for many young minds.

Ashwini’s Incredible Journey Is An Inspiration To All

Born in a small village in Bellary, Karnataka, Ashwini has overcome numerous hurdles since a young age. Since she was born visually impaired, her extended family thought she had no future.

“They even suggested that my parents should kill me, because there’s nothing I could do if I couldn’t see. But my parents supported me throughout and never gave up on me. They wanted me to study and be independent. I graduated and even worked as an HR professional in an MNC, but my heart just wasn’t in it.”

Ashwini left it all to dedicate her time and efforts to helping underprivileged children with disabilities.

“When I was in college, people were scared to talk to me or even sit next to me. It was a very difficult time, but this is what motivated me to start an inclusive school.”

Belaku Academy is a free residential school from classes 1 to 10, where underprivileged children are given meals, shelter, and quality education. Ashwini believes that a good education can empower these children and help them lead independent lives in the future. At the school, computer and science experiments, sports and cultural activities are conducted on a regular basis. They even have a dedicated science lab and digital library, along with braille books and braille computers. The school currently has 35 students, and Ashwini now wants to take in many more.

You Can Give These Children A Bright Future

Belaku Academy is currently on rented premises where they can’t accommodate more than the current number of students. Ashwini wants to build a school for these children, that they can call their own.

“We now want to build our own school so that we can accommodate around 200 children and give many more of them access to high-quality education. But I can’t do this on my own. I need your support to ensure these children have a bright future.”

Your contributions towards the construction material will give 200 visually impaired underprivileged children a life of dignity, hope, and smiles.
