When Shekhar Mahajan saw little children working in tea stalls and hotels by the roadside, he couldn’t help but feel bad about their plight.
“These children were supposed to go to school, play with friends, and enjoy their childhood. Instead, they’re working hard in front of a hot furnace, getting abused or even beaten by their employers. At that moment, I decided that this was no life for a child - I wanted to bring back their lost smiles,” - Shekhar Mahajan, Founder, Sahyog Care For You.
For over two decades, Sahyog Care has been a guiding light for countless children trapped in child labour
Shekhar Mahajan founded Sahyog Care for You in 2002 in Delhi. He has a diverse professional background with post-graduate degrees in social work and law. He is also a dedicated social reformer committed to creating positive social transformations. Together with the Sahyog team, he has rescued over 2000 innocent lives via 140 operations and given them a brighter future by implementing impactful programs across nine states in India.
Child labour and bonded labour continue to be a grim reality for millions of children in India. They toil for long hours in hazardous conditions for a meagre wage. These children, often as young as five, are found in firecracker factories, brick kilns, garment factories, and even begging on the streets. Their days are filled with backbreaking work, exposure to harmful chemicals, and the constant risk of accidents. Education and proper healthcare are a far-fetched dream for them as they get trapped in a cycle of poverty that steals their childhood.
“Many of these children work for hours on an empty stomach and are often crammed into crowded rooms without going outside for weeks at a time. As a result, they commonly suffer from malnutrition, breathing problems, and weakened immune systems.”
Shekhar explains they follow a meticulous process to rescue these kids from exploitation and help them rebuild their lives. First, they identify areas rife with child labour. They target companies that exploit children and file complaints with the authorities. Once a rescue is planned, they form a task force with relevant authorities to ensure the children's safety during the operation. The organisation has successfully helped secure over ₹6.04 crore in back wages for rescued child laborers, filed FIRs against 750 employers, and facilitated the sealing of 251 factories employing children.
“After rescuing the children, we provide them with counseling to help them heal from the trauma they've endured. Our team works very hard to reunite them with their families, whenever possible. In some cases, we have also helped these children reclaim their stolen wages.”
At present, Sahyog Care is working with 40+ kids who have been rescued from horrible conditions. Here, they offer them a loving and nurturing environment, give them warm meals, and teach them vocational skills. The team at Sahyog helps them be a part of the mainstream and gives them a fair chance to survive the world.
