When the priest at the cremation ground asked Deb Kumar Mallick to wear white for the next 14 days, after his father’s death, Mallick asked him the reason.
“I couldn’t see the point in wearing white for just 14 days. After all, I had lost my dear father - how was 14 days going to be enough for me to mourn his loss?” explains Deb Kumar.
And that is why he decided to wear a white shirt and a white pair of trousers for the rest of his life. Today, even though he has lost his own parents to old age, he is the son of around 500 elderly in Baranagar. For the last few years, this man has dedicated his life to their welfare - his sole aim is to give them a warm meal and the life of respect they deserve.
These parents don’t complain but their silent tears tell stories of pain
Deb Kumar’s childhood was a difficult one - an accident left his father paralysed and his mother worked tirelessly to support the family. Often, there would be days when they would sleep on hungry stomachs. But despite the hardship, it was his desire to become successful in life that helped him stand on his own feet. He is now a businessman in Baranagar and earns enough to not just feed his family but support many others in need.
“I had always wanted to do something for those who have no one to look after them. I remember the first time when an elderly couple approached me for some food. I was a little surprised- they seemed to come from a well-to-do family and so I asked them what the problem was.”
Deb was shocked to know that this elderly couple was not being given any food at their own home. Their children refused to take care of them. But this was just the beginning. Slowly, he started enquiring around and found there were numerous old people who were resigned to the same fate. Some didn’t get food and medicines, while others had to stay in a small dingy room because their children didn’t want to waste money on them. The less fortunate ones have been thrown out of their own homes, and forced to live on the streets in dire conditions. Their plight brought tears to his eyes. He immediately knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life serving these abandoned elderly.
“My mother and my wife supported me so much. Both of them used to wake up early in the morning to cook food for these old people. I would take that food to each one of them in my cycle and their happy faces would make my day. Obviously, their sons and daughters didn’t like me visiting their homes, they didn’t want anyone to know about their mistreatment. But none of this stopped me.”
Today, even though his mother has passed away his wife and a dedicated team of volunteers stand by him to help him continue his mission. He is now feeding 486 people in need. Along with this, he has a free ambulance service and funeral service for the poor and the homeless. He wants to build an old age home for all those who can’t afford to stay in expensive care centres.
They’re no different from my own Maa and Baba - to me, they’re no less than God
Deb Kumar refuses to take even a single rupee of donation but instead, he insists people donate their time and some products to help the elderly in need. He is based out of Baranagar, near the Dakhineshwar Temple, and currently feeds people within a 50 km radius of his home.
“But there are so many more who are struggling each day. They have been abandoned by their own children, children for whom they had given their whole lives. I want to reach out to more and more such parents. I want to tell them that even if no one stands with them in their darkest time, this son of theirs won’t leave them alone.”
Deb Kumar’s passion is inspiring, he is a real-life hero to hundreds of people in and around Baranagar. They’re no less than his family. You can join his mission by donating groceries and feeding countless abandoned elderly - every donation will make a difference.
