Help India’s Nest Man, Rakesh Khatri in Building Nests For Sparrows

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

Eco Roots Foundation was founded in 2012 by renowned environmentalist Mr. Rakesh Khatri, also known as the Nest Man of India. Since its commencement, the NGO has been working tirelessly to conserve the ecosystem, environment, and biodiversity. The organisation acts as a medium to sensitise people towards environmental issues, thereby motivating them to work towards environmental conservation.

    How does the organisation function?

Eco Roots carries out small initiatives such as building tree canopies in the RWAs of East Delhi, installing recycled e-waste bins in residential areas, and establishing herbal nurseries in school complexes. Eco Roots also closely work with children and the youth, encouraging them to take care of their environment. The aim is to build up a medium that is strong enough to invoke the curiosity of the younger generation to go about finding solutions to global problems themselves. The foundation aims to introduce people to the beauty of our ecosystem to inspire conservation. This objective makes Ecotourism an important goal for the organisation.

One of the major areas where Khatri has done commendable work is building nests for sparrows. Growing up, he was always taught to be compassionate towards all kinds of animals and let them live peacefully.

But now, it’s different. Birds, especially sparrows,  are unable to enter people’s homes and make nests. They need gaps in walls, but now people don’t want to see holes in their walls. Bushes have disappeared. So where will birds make their homes?”- Rakesh Khatri.

This was when he started building nests for the sparrows. Khatri’s first attempt with coconut shells failed as no bird came to make those their home. Instead of giving up, Khatri continued to experiment with materials suitable for birds and narrowed them down to bamboo sticks, jute thread, and husk.

Now, Khatri has a record of making over 1.25 lakh nests for birds all over India. Other than this, he was also felicitated with a record in the Limca Book of Records for the highest number of workshops conducted to teach participants how to make handmade nests throughout the country. His work has won him many accolades and has made him a household name. Khatri’s work is now featured in a dedicated chapter in ICSE English textbook for 4th standard.

How you can help him in his efforts

Rakesh Khatri now needs your help to set up many more bird nests across the country which will give thousands of birds a safe home. The growing urbanization has snatched away the homes of these birds and it is now our turn to help them now. Khatri’s organisation, Eco Roots, has been relentlessly working to spread awareness about environmental concerns. With your help, they will be able to build bird nests with sustainable materials and create a difference.
