Support Gramya To Help Thousands Of Women In Rural Telangana Stand On Their Own Feet

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

We’ve come such a long way in so many different areas as a society, but even after all this time, women and girls remain significantly behind. Whether it’s stereotypical gender roles, lack of education, lack of opportunities and much more, women not only have to fight every step of the way but are subjected to violence and discrimination in the process. Especially those in rural India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) data, domestic violence against women is at the top of the list of categories of violence against women in India.

“There are so many women who face domestic violence at home at the hands of their husbands, and in such cases, they have little to no means to look after their children or stand on their own feet. They have no option but to be at others’ mercy. Abused physically and mentally, they have to tend to their own injuries while also protecting their innocent children from the same. In so many villages, the girl child is looked at with such disappointment and their fates are sometimes decided even before they are a few months old. Do these women and children deserve such cruelty and pain? This needs to change, and urgently.” - Rukmini Rao, Co-founder, Gramya

Gramya Has Been Uplifting Women & Children Since 1993

Started by a group of developmental activists in 1993, Gramya Resource Centre For Women aims to create a just society that will provide political, social and economic opportunities for women - especially for tribal and dalit women. Ashima, Jamuna, Kavitha, Suhasini, Usha, Shanti and Rukmini want to uplift and empower these women, giving them the opportunities to live a better, healthier life. They work in the Nalgonda and Khammam districts of Telangana.

Gramya works closely with community-based organizations, women’s organizations, and youth leadership among others at the local, state, national and international levels to seek justice for marginalized communities.

“We promote child rights with a focus on the girl child and education. Women have double the burden of work at home and outside, this, coupled with low wages and being deprived of property makes them extremely vulnerable. Some of these women face violence at home, work all day to earn a meagre amount and receive no support from their husbands.”

Women who face domestic violence come to Gramya’s Sakhi Centre where they’re provided with four free services - rescue, counselling, shelter, medical care and legal aid. Along with securing the rights of women and girls, Gramya also works towards the eradication of female infanticide, improvement of livelihoods of women, strengthening healthcare systems to ensure women’s reproductive rights and many other self-help initiatives.

Support Them To Make A Difference

Over the countless years that they’ve been active, Gramya has had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of women and girls in rural India. However, while they continue to fight for the rights of the marginalized, Gramya is struggling to do this on their own now. They now need your help to give these women and children the chance to stand on their own feet.

They need your support to get grocery kits, stationery kits and blankets which will significantly improve the lives of the women and will support children on their path to education. Join hands with Gramya to truly make a difference to the lives of the marginalized.
