Home to numerous fireworks factories, Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu, is a town filled with skilled artisans who craft dazzling fireworks that light up the skies during festivals like Diwali. Sivakasi produces over 90% of the fireworks in India, providing employment to over 8 lakh people. However, behind the seemingly vibrant atmosphere, is the dark reality of these helpless people.
“These labourers face challenging working conditions every single day. This includes long working hours, exposure to hazardous materials, safety concerns and being vulnerable to accidents and injuries. Their life is even more difficult than we know or can imagine, and our NGO is doing our best to uplift and protect them,” says Vijay Kumar, a social activist and founder of Human Resource Foundation (HRF), an NGO dedicated to uplifting the underprivileged.
For nearly two decades now, HRF has been working tirelessly to better the lives of people affected by explosions in Sivakasi. And this Diwali, they need your support to continue their efforts.
Hundreds Of People Are Left Injured And Sometimes Permanently Challenged From Explosions
Rajan*, a skilled worker in the firecracker industry in Sivakasi, spent last Diwali in silence. There were no celebrations at home. Rajan spent his time thinking about his days at the firecracker factory, and the time an explosion completely changed his life. Rajan was left not only with physical scars but also emotional ones. The accident left him challenged and unable to continue working. Like Rajan, there are hundreds of people who are left injured and sometimes permanently challenged.
“There are countless explosions every month. People affected by these explosions have their entire lives turned upside down. Many are isolated and forced to withdraw from work, gatherings, and social life. The social stigma is debilitating and accident survivors struggle to make it from one day to the next. Their injuries also cause them severe pain, where people can’t even manage basic household tasks.”
Workers in firecracker factories face a range of hazards, including burn injuries from handling explosive materials, respiratory issues due to chemical exposure, and eye injuries from sparks and particles. The loud environment contributes to hearing loss, while accidents with machinery can cause traumatic injuries. The overall working conditions can also impact mental health. Additionally, the seasonal nature of the industry leaves workers grappling with job insecurity during non-festive periods.
