Project
More than two lakh people have been affected by the flood in Uttar Pradesh. 200+ villages in over a dozen districts, including Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Barabanki, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Sitapur have been struggling due to the natural calamity. Countless people have lost their homes and are in no position to feed their families. Little children and the elderly are in pain and the situation is getting grim.
“I couldn’t see these children suffer in silence. I knew I had to do something for them. And that’s why I started Maa ki Rasoi with 4 other women who also want to serve the poor and the underprivileged kids living on the borders of Chhapra (Bihar) and Ballia (Uttar Pradesh). These kids deserve healthy meals and I am here to give them that,” - Kalavati Devi, Maa ki Rasoi.
I am a mother to hundreds of children now - they’re my responsibility
The remote villages of Uttar Pradesh hardly have any good income opportunities and hundreds of families struggle to get by. Little children sleep on empty stomachs. To make things worse, COVID had made things very difficult for these villagers. Countless children have lost their parents and those who were spared by the pandemic lost their everything in the recent floods. Many of them have been forced into substance abuse and other illegal businesses.
Kalavati always wanted to support them. While she never had children of her own - their difficulties brought tears to her eyes. Since the start of Maa ki Rasoi, they have been feeding 450-500 children daily.
“All my life I had been heartbroken because I couldn’t have children and now I am a mother to hundreds of children. I am responsible for their well-being.”
Kalavati and her 4 other friends are on a mission to not let any poor child go hungry. Be it rain or storm, they don’t miss a single day of their feeding drive. All of them bring things from their own kitchen - in fact, Kalavati uses up all her produce from the small piece of land she owns.
“People used to call me crazy because I gave away my own food. What they didn't get is that I was happy feeding my children. We cook rice, sabzi, and khichdi - put all of it on our cart and go to feed these kids who stay almost 5 km away from us. They live in tents with very little to call their own, our food is the biggest source of happiness for them.”
Kalavati needs your support to feed many more children in need
These 5 women spearheaded by the indomitable Kalavati have been tireless in their efforts to give the poor and underprivileged kids a better life. Their camaraderie and determination are an eye-opener to all of us who think helping others is a difficult task. Kalavati and her friends have proven that all that is needed is the will to spread happiness.
But now they need your support to continue their work. Join hands with Kalavati and help feed hundreds of hungry children in the villages of Uttar Pradesh. Donate groceries and support these firebrands of women.
