Priya was barely one year old when she came to Hum Foundation’s shelter home, Angelz Hut. Her mother was struggling to look after her three children and baby Priya had nowhere to go. With no roof over her head or a hand to feed her, Priya was weak and malnourished. However, coming to Angelz Hut changed her life. Today, Priya is in the fifth grade and thriving.
“We have taken in so many children like Priya over the years. Many of the girls that come here are abandoned, come from broken families, have fathers who are alcoholics… they’ve seen the worst of everything since they were just babies and don’t know any other life. Many of them live in slums and huts, which have been demolished…they’ve spent days and nights on the streets with no food or shelter. Angelz Hut is where they’re given a new beginning. Watching them laugh, play, learn and grow has been my greatest joy.” - Ayesha Jahaan, Trustee, Hum Foundation
Ayesha’s Survey Revealed That Countless Had Never Been To School, And She Was Determined To Change That
In 2014, Ayesha Jahaan and her mother, Najma Shaikh started Hum Foundation in Mumbai, Maharashtra to give underprivileged girls access to good education and a safe place to call home. With a strong belief that empowered and educated women could not only contribute to the economy and stand on their own feet, but could also change the world, Hum Foundation gives young girls who have no one else to lean on shelter, food, education and the opportunities they deserve.
“I watched my mother always helping those in need. Whatever she earned, she would donate a portion of that to the poor. I was also passionate about making a difference in the lives of the poor and homeless. I’m a graduate of sociology and worked at an NGO… I realised that the problems on the ground were far greater than I had ever imagined, and my experience there helped me set up Hum Foundation. I began by doing surveys in the nearby slums and realised that there were so many girls between the ages of 5 and 10 who had never been to school! And that was the beginning of our journey of empowering these girls.”
Angelz Hut began with just over 8 girls and has since grown to nearly 30 residents, with 10-15 of them attending as day boarders. For each and every one of them, Angelz Hut serves as their home, a safe haven where they are well taken care of and where they form deep and lasting relationships with one another. Despite having faced different challenges, these sisters are bonded together through Ayesha's tireless efforts.
“Even today, the girl child is considered unlucky by so many. But they deserve the same opportunities as everyone else, they deserve the same access.”
The Only Way She Can Continue Empowering These Girls Is With Your Help
Ayesha faces several challenges in running the NGO today. With a lack of consistent donations, she has to make do with whatever she has.
“I have to ensure rent and electricity are paid, along with the staff salaries, while also making sure that these girls don’t face any shortage in food or other products. I will never let them go hungry, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to manage all of this without many donations or support.”
Ayesha needs your help to get groceries, hygiene products and sanitary pads for the girls at the shelter. This will allow them to have a happy, healthy and comfortable life and is important for their overall development. She also needs help getting a van so that the day boarders can travel safely and they can also help more girls in need.
These girls can get an education, make a name for themselves and empower other girls if they get your support. Their bright future is in your hands. Donate to support them.
About the NGO: Najma Shaikh and Ayesha Jahaan founded Hum Foundation in Mumbai with the belief that educated women can improve the economy and reduce social issues like the dowry system and child marriage. Hum's mission is to provide education, shelter, food, and hope to marginalized children and youth, focusing on health, education, and rights. They aim to empower underprivileged girls through education and character development. HUM is a non-profit organization committed to making a difference in society. Their shelter, Angelz Hut, is home to over 30 girls who are getting the food, shelter and education they deserve.
