Rescued From Cruelty & Slaughterhouses, Hundreds Of Cows Have Found A Safe Home At IIAW
Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.
Project
A short distance from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, lies a serene 5-acre sanctuary where hundreds of cows, bulls, calves, and buffaloes roam freely, enjoying their peaceful surroundings. But this has not always been their life. Rescued from cruelty, accidents and life-threatening situations, these innocent animals have had to fight every step of the way.
“I can’t explain the feeling of watching them eat food or drink water after days of starving. Their eyes tell us so much about their pain and suffering. When I touch their faces to comfort them, I can see they aren’t scared anymore. These cows are often kept in such terrible conditions or given away when they are old or of no use to humans…they don’t deserve to be treated like this,” says Ms. Kamala Ramamurthy, who is devoted to making sure these animals get the life they deserve.
They Want To Save Many More Cows, But They’re Struggling
For years now, the Indian Institute of Animal Welfare (IIAW) has been a source of hope and care for cows in need. Kamala, driven by a deep desire to help even more of these gentle creatures, now finds herself facing a heartbreaking limitation: she lacks the resources to continue her mission.
“The founder of IIAW, Dr. Sadhana was such an inspiration to us all. She started rescuing cows after she realised that her milkman was going to sell his cows to a slaughterhouse because they were old. When she took the cows from him, it felt like she had found her purpose. And there was no looking back. Even two months ago, when she was in the ICU after a terrible fall, she held my hand and told me that I needed to take this mission forward and look after all the cows at the gaushala. But I don’t know how to go on without help. So many people reach out to us after hearing about the love and care with which we look after these animals, but I have no option but to tell them that we don’t have the resources”
Dr. Sadhana unfortunately passed away soon after, but Kamala will never forget her last words to her. She had made a promise and intends to keep it. However, with over 700 cows, 100 bulls, calves and buffaloes, Kamala often has to struggle to get enough food and medicines to look after all of them.
From Cows With Rare Condition To Those With Disabilities, IIAW Is A Home For All
The Indian Institute of Animal Welfare is a place filled with compassion and hope, especially for cows and cattle in need. Here, they care for cows that may be older or unable to produce milk, providing them with a safe haven thanks to the kindness of rescuers. No matter the challenge – whether it's cows with rare condition, injuries, or other health issues – the institute is there, offering unwavering care and support.
“Cows with fractures and injuries that would have otherwise been taken to slaughterhouses are looked after here. We have so many cows who’ve lost their limbs in an accident and have maggot-infested wounds, but have recovered completely after coming here. Even the cows with rare condition, whose rare conditions have spread to their faces, we try and give them the most comfortable life we possibly can.”
The Indian Institute of Animal Welfare is not just a place for cows; it's a sanctuary of compassion and hope. They desperately want to help many more cows, but they can't do it alone. IIAW needs your support to provide food and medicine, not only for the cows they currently care for but also to extend their compassion to even more cows in need of a safe home. Your support truly makes a world of difference.
About the NGO: The Indian Institute of Animal Welfare was established by Dr. S. Shankardev, Dr. G. Sadhana Rao, and Sri K.M. Padmanabhan. Located in Venkatapuram, Uthukkottai Tk., Thiruvallur Dt., just 70 kilometres from Chennai, the institute's goshala spans across 5 acres of land generously provided under a long-term, free lease by Capt. R. Muralidharan, who also serves as a Trustee of the Indian Institute of Animal Welfare. The goshala is currently home to approximately 700 cows, 100 bulls, calves, and buffaloes, along with 50 dogs, goats, ducks, and cats. A dedicated team of 60 workers tirelessly cares for these animals. The goshala's reputation for exceptional care has led to a growing number of donors choosing to entrust their cows to its care. Presently, the goshala is under the compassionate stewardship of Ms. Kamala Ramamurthy.
