    Project

47 years ago, Dr. Usha Punjabi had gone to a program at a medical school where she was invited as a guest and there she met many impaired hearing people, older than her, who didn’t know how to read and write. Usha was shocked. She decided that she would do something for them. After all, like them, she too was impaired hearing and mute for a long time.

“If my father hadn’t believed in me then I would never have been able to complete my studies. I wanted to show these people that I am there for them,” - Dr. Usha Punjabi, Founder,  Indore Impaired Hearing Bilingual Academy (IDBA) run by Mook Badhir Sangathan.

Millions of Indians suffer in silence - this school in Indore is changing that

63 million Indians suffer from hearing disabilities and it is needless to say that they face incessant discrimination from society. They are forced to live a life without any dreams. Despite having a lot of potentials, countless children with deafness end up being a burden to their family members.

“There’s no one to understand their problems and so I took it upon myself to give them a life they deserve. There were many challenges and people didn’t want to believe in us. But today I am proud to say that we have over 600 students and so many of them have reached great heights.”

This school, based out of Indore, has won various accolades - they have made the city, state and country proud in many streams like education, sports, art, and cultural activities. Usha and her husband, Rajkumar Punjabi have been awarded many times by national and international platforms. Usha herself has received 3 national awards.

“My mom’s determination is a constant source of inspiration for all of us. It is solely because of her hard work that we have become so famous. When Geeta, the impaired hearing Indian girl was found in Pakistan, the government referred her to our academy. That was a moment of great pride for all of us. We want to do right by all the residents and give them a better life,” - Yogesh Punjabi.

You can support this unique school

IDBA has been doing momentous work for the impaired hearing community in India. They have not only given them education but also helped them with vocational training. They want to do so much more but they need your help.

“We used to get donations earlier but the pandemic has changed a lot of things. We need better infrastructure for the 600 students and construct a new floor to bring in new students. We want to give them good, nutritious food. We request you all to please come forward and donate groceries and construction materials so that we can help many more in need,” - Yogesh Punjabi.
