Donate a school kit and help send these children from slums to schools.

This story started back in 2013, when the volunteers at Jeevan Mitra noticed that the children of maids, widows and divorcees living in the slums of Pune (Bhim nagar, Jaijawan nagar, Vadarwadi, Kalwad) were deprived of basic education and were forced to work to support their parents in their daily struggle and distress due to extreme poverty. 

Nariya is 12- year old child living in these slums since her childhood. She grew up in extreme poverty and often saw people in her locality dying of starvation. Nariya has never been to school in all her life since she accompanies her mother, who does some daily chores in the houses of people in the neighbourhood. Everytime the little girl sees the children in these houses going to school, she wonders if there’d ever be a day when she can read a book like them too. 

Despite all the growth and development in India, the economic disparity between rich and poor remains very significant. Even the school fees of regular pre-primary schools cost around Rs. 25,000-40,000 a year, which is way beyond the capacity of low-income, economically backward and poor families. 

“Jeevan Mitra Educational Society” decided to help the kids like Nariya get out of this situation, by providing free education along with uniforms, shoes, books, stationery, school bags etc.

In June 2014, Jeevan Mitra took the responsibility of educating 46 children from these slums, by starting the Mahatma Gandhi School in Pune. The school was inaugurated by well-known social activists Dr. Vikas Amte, Shri Bhai Vaidya, and Shri Baba Adhav and today, the school is educating 245 underprivileged and poor children through Nursery, LKG, UKG,1 STD, 2 STD and 3 STD classes. 

The Jeevan Mitra education society aims to build a residential school for these children, ensuring the accessibility of true and holistic education to the economically weaker segment of the society for free.
