Project
Kamdhenu Gau Dhaam Trust is a loving home to around 270 cows who are sick, old, or abandoned. Located at Naraingarh, Chheharta in Amritsar, Punjab, this is a 7000-square-yard shelter for cows built by Municipal Corporation Amritsar. It was founded in the year 2016 under the Grace and Guidance of Maitreya Dadashreeji, a Global Humanitarian, along with the help of numerous volunteers. The organisation works day and night for the welfare of these innocent animals - their sole aim is to give them a peaceful life after years of cruelty and torture.
Countless cows are abandoned on the streets of Amritsar every day - we are their only hope
This loving sanctuary stands as one of the nation's most unique gaushalas, where the sale of milk is not encouraged. Only a select few cows produce milk, and that is used to feed their calves. Any surplus is shared among the devoted caretakers or the sevadaars.
“This place is like an old age home for cows at their last stage of life. We give personal attention and care to each individual animal with separate special zones allocated for bulls, cows, and calves and a special care unit for sick and injured ones. The cows are treated like family members here and not milk-producing machines,” - Sukhamrit Singh, volunteer.
Sukhamrit has been associated with the gaushala since its inception and is a passionate animal lover who believes that they are sentient beings who deserve our love and care. Along with the caretakers and other volunteers, he ensures that these cows get proper nutritious food and medical care. Fresh drinking water, proper ventilation for the bovine animal family, and round-the-clock care to fulfill all their needs and requirements make this place a safe haven for the hundreds of cattle living here.
“We get 15-20 rescue calls on a monthly basis and while the Municipal Corporation helps us rescue many of these, there are several rescues that we have to do on our own. The cows are found in terrible conditions, with tonnes of plastic in their stomachs. Old and sick, sometimes they come to us when there is hardly anything we can do for them. We try our best to ease their pain and give them some relief.”
Sukhamrit adds that their vets and para vets take very good care of the injured and ailing cows - especially the ones that come with minor fractures, maggot wounds, rare conditions, etc. The gaushala also doesn’t differentiate among any cow on the basis of its breed. All cows who are in need of help are given the care they require.
The gaushala is on a mission to save many innocent lives - you can support their journey
Kamdhenu Gau Dhaam struggles to provide a quality life for their animals despite their best intentions. They spend over 9 lakhs on fodder alone and the costs are ever-increasing.
“We are also very particular about maintaining a very clean and hygienic environment for the animals and for that, we need a regular supply of hygiene materials. Finally, we are also in need of an animal rescue vehicle so that we can save many more lives in danger and give them a healthier and more comfortable life.”
Basanti was hit by an iron rod in her eyes when she entered the fields of a farmer but fortunately, she was brought to Kamdhenu Gau Dhaam just in time and the skilled vets and dedicated staff were able to save her life. You can help them save many more like Basanti - every donation counts.
