Help This 57YO Widow In Rajkot Look After 700+ Injured Cows

17 years ago, when Dewuben's husband passed away, she found herself alone in the world. She was scared of what the future held for her. However, she felt a calling to care for cows who were voiceless and vulnerable. Dewuben spends her waking hours tending to these animals. They get multiple distress calls in a day and her team rushes to the spot to bring the injured or abandoned animal home. She recalls an incident when they had rescued a severely injured cow from the highway. 

“A fast-moving vehicle had run over her and she was in a terrible condition. We brought her to our gaushala, immediately called the doctors, and gave her the needed treatment. But even after continuously looking after her for three days, we couldn’t save her. That broke my heart,” - Dewuben Makwana. 

This gaushala is a sanctuary for 700+ cows and Dewuben looks after each one of them with utmost care  

Dewuben explains that she found solace in caring for these cows after her husband’s passing. With no children to look after, they are like her children now, and she pours all her love and energy into ensuring their well-being. 

“Every day, we care for cows that have been left behind by their owners when they fall sick, suffer accidents, or become blind. Here, these gentle creatures receive proper food, clean drinking water, and the attention they desperately need.”

During the initial days, when there were hardly any donors to support them, Dewuben didn’t hesitate to sell off her belongings to support the gaushala. Now even though, there are skilled staff to take care of the animals and some kind-hearted souls pitch in to help them run the gaushala, this is not an easy task. 

“We try to feed 40 kilos of green fodder daily to the cows, but we can only manage to provide 250-300 kilos for all of them. This is far from sufficient. Many of our cows need medical care but these medicines are costly and with no personal income, I often have to buy these medicines on credit.”
