“They don’t have proper homes nor do they have proper jobs. On top of that they’re constantly the victim of stigma and discrimination. Their life isn’t easy and is fraught with dangers. The sad part is that even when they reach out for help there is hardly anyone who comes forward to help them. It is sad that even in this time and age, we ostracize them,” - Rudrani Chhetri, Founder, Mitr Trust, talking about transgenders and their plight.
This 42 YO trans woman is a firebrand who has taken up the cause of the LGBTQIA community since 2005. Taking inspiration from her own struggle, Rudrani is now committed to the cause of bringing awareness in these communities who are still forced to live in the periphery of the society.
I want them to feel safe, I want them to feel accepted
Rudrani founded Mitr Trust with an aim to reduce the risks of HIV and other s*xually-transmitted infections (STIs), and to improve the reproductive and s*xual health of men who have s*x with men in developing countries.
“I used to be an effeminate boy and it was not long before I knew that I was a woman trapped inside the body of a woman. But it was not easy, getting myself accepted and getting respect from the society. My mother has been very supportive - she is my pillar of strength. Similarly, I want to be a friend, a mitr, for all those who need help.”
Rudrani has also been working on starting her own modelling agency for the transgenders - she wants to see them earning a proper livelihood and lead a happy life. They have been working closely with Delhi Transport Corporation, Delhi Metro and various colleges in Delhi to raise awareness and highlight the issues and problems that marginalised and socially-excluded MSM (men having s*x with men) face. They have been able to impact over 2500 transgenders in and around Delhi.
Mitr Trust has also started a shelter home with the support of the Ministry of Social Welfare, they call it Garima Griha. As of now, there are 25 residents but they intend to reach out to all those in need - who are homeless and abandoned.
Your support can make a difference
“The pandemic has made things very difficult for the transgenders. For those who have been involved in s*x work and/or begging by the roadside, they have had no income at all. Some of them who have gone back to their families have faced only torture and harrassment. It is sad and without us they have no one to help them.”
Mitr Trust wants to give grocery kits with rice, dal, soya chunks, oil, spices etc so that these transgenders can have a warm, nutritious meal. Your support will help them reach out to many more in need and give them a comfortable life. Donate now.
