Hundreds Have Been Rendered Homeless Due To The Chiplun Floods, Help Them

    Project

The people of Maharashtra were only just recovering from the deadly second wave, as they saw some of the highest number of COVID cases in the country. Now, once again, the state has been brought to its knees. With landslides, collapsed buildings and rivers crossing danger levels, Maharashtra saw the worst floods in the last 40 years. Over 300 people have died because of the devastating floods whereas thousands have been left stranded and homeless. The damage to property has been unforeseen.

A low-lying area between two mountains, Chiplun is bearing the brunt of the floods

More than 50% of the coastal town of Chiplun in Ratnagiri has reportedly been submerged, as heartbreaking videos from the area have come to light. Incessant rain has ravaged the Konkan region for several days causing major rivers in Ratnagiri and Raigad districts to overflow above the danger levels.Several long-distance trains have been stopped, cancelled or rescheduled on the Konkan Railway route.

Chiplun’s marketplaces, residential and commercial complexes are under water. Electricity and communication lines have been snapped, bridges in and around Chiplun are underwater and establishing contact with local residents has been a struggle. The State Transport bus stand has been completely submerged, with all parked buses under water.

As the Vashishti river overflowed, hundreds of residents of Chiplun were left stranded and were awaiting rescue.

Even as the government announced that teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed, fishermen from Malvan, more than 230 km away, rushed with their boats to fish out people who were getting washed away by the strong currents in the rising waters.

Currently, as the water has receded and the rescue operations have been halted - NGOs and volunteers have been helping the Chiplunkars get back on their feet and resume a normal life.

Making The Difference has extended a helping hand to the people of Chiplun

Mumbai based NGO,  Making The Difference, have been working tirelessly to help thousands ever since the pandemic began. They  now want to leave no stone unturned to help people during these devastating floods. However, they need your help to continue their relief work.

They want to distribute essential grocery kits, ready to eat food items like bread and jam and household items like lighters, plates, bowls and blankets, pillows etc. Chiplun is struggling to fight the aftermath of this dangerous flood. Even a small donation from your side will go a long way in helping these people in urgent need.
