A Safe Home To Thousands Of Cows, This Gaushala Now Needs Your Help To Give Them A Better Life

“We recently received a call to rescue a Gaumata from the road where she was hit by a vehicle. When we reached the place, we saw that she was heavily pregnant. We got her to our gaushala as soon as possible and here she gave birth to a healthy calf. But we couldn’t save the mother. She was in too much pain and was in no condition to survive the procedure that could save her from the accident. It was such a heartbreaking sight to see the infant calf staring at his dead mother, unable to understand why he lost her so soon…,” - Rajkumar, Trustee Member of Manav Gau Sadan.  

The gaushala near village Rewla Khanpur, New Delhi, has been a safe home to thousands of cows for the last 25 years. They have dedicated their lives to saving injured, sick, and abandoned cows who have nowhere to go.  

These innocent animals suffer in silence, we are their only hope  

While our traditions and customs teach us to pay homage to the Gaumata and look after her, there are many who have been taking advantage of the innocent, sentient being. Talking about the basic needs and requirements of a healthy cow, Anjali Dabas, Vice-President, Manav Gau Sadan says that a cow requires 25 kgs of green fodder, apart from other necessary supplements and vitamins. 

“The dairy farmers are often not able to provide good quality food to the cows and set them free on the roads to fend for themselves. As a result, they end up eating tonnes of plastic and garbage to fill their stomachs. Not only do they contract diseases but some of them have to undergo surgeries as well in our gaushala. Their helpless condition will bring tears to your eyes,” - Anjali Dabas. 

The volunteers and doctors at Manav Gau Sadan work round the clock to provide a safe home to over 3500 cows. Some of them are old, some have severe acid burns and many others are recovering from near-fatal accidents. They have also taken great care of many Gaumatas who came to their shelter with the dangerous Lumpy Skin Disease. With dwindling donations, the gaushala is trying very hard to give all its residents a comfortable life.

“Our major requirement at this time is construction materials besides fodder and medicines. Our sheds are over 20 years old and have gone rusty. During the rains and the harsh winters, the cows don’t have a proper roof over their heads. Many of them fall sick and suffer from pneumonia.
