Deepak Kumar is a young man in his 30s who has dedicated his life to the betterment of the coal miners' community in India in and around Dhanbad. Thousands of families in this part of the country work in terrible conditions in the coal mines. Bending under the weight of heavy sacks of coal, they are forced to toil hard the whole day so that they can feed their families. 

“These people suffer from headaches, asthma, tuberculosis, etc because of their working conditions. But their main concern continues to be hunger. Even little children are not spared, they break coal with their tiny hands - hoping to get a morsel of food. The sight will bring tears to your eyes,” - Deepak Kumar, Founder, Nand Care Foundation. 

For the past 6 years now, Nand Care Foundation has been a ray of hope to countless families in need 

Nand Care Foundation has been working very hard for the marginalised and tribal communities who hardly have any income despite working long hours in the coal mines. The elders in the family, often go hungry trying their best to feed the children. Nand Care has also been instrumental in educating the children from the communities and supporting these families in times of need. 

“For the last 6 years, our aim has been to give freshly cooked meals and dry ration kits to these families who have no one but us. The elderly and the children are the two most important sections of the demography who suffer a lot. Both of them need nutrition and we try to fulfil their needs to the best of our abilities.” 

Talking about the issue of hunger and malnutrition in this area, Deepak recalls an incident where he saw an old man pick up rice that was spilled by mistake. 

“He washed it and then started eating that. I was shocked! This is the situation in which these people live. They deserve a better life and I want to work for them.”
