Tapsee wants to become an IPS Officer once she grows up. She will be writing her 10th board exams this year and is confident that she will pass with flying colours. Looking at her happy face, her parents, Hare Ram Pandey and Bhavani Devi beam with pride - what could have possibly made them happier? Pandeyji’s eyes tear up as he recalls the fateful day when Tapsee came into their lives.
“Someone told me that there was an abandoned baby girl lying in the bushes a little far away from our house. I rushed to the spot, I knew I had to save her. The poor child was covered in ants and was in a coma. I wasted no time taking her to the best child specialist in Deoghar, Jharkhand. After 21 days of treatment, she was fully cured. Her innocent face filled our hearts with joy. Bhavani and I had always wanted a daughter, so we decided to bring her up as our own,” - Hare Ram Pandey, Founder, Narayan Seva Ashram.
Hare Ram Pandey is now a father to 35 girls who have been abandoned by their own
A man with a golden heart, Pandeyji (61)was always into giving back to society and Tapsee’s arrival in his family acted as a catalyst for him. The husband-wife duo resolved to take care of all those infant girls who were left on the roads in horrible conditions. They made it their life's mission to rescue them and give them a safe home. That was the start of Narayan Seva Ashram in Deoghar.
“If I ever got to know about an abandoned child, I was determined to bring her to my home. I couldn’t let them die out there! Soon, our home filled up with the laughs and giggles with little ones and seeing their happy faces Bhavani and I knew that we were on the right path.”
Almost two decades ago, this was not an easy job. Pandeyji and his wife used to stay up late at night tending to these infants who would have never known the warmth of a mother’s love but for them. He recalls one such night when they couldn’t heat up the milk to feed the baby girls and he went out at night to bring dry branches, and paper so that they could make a fire. On another occasion, the couple had to sell their mixer grinder to pay for the food for the little girls.
“My neighbours hated the fact that we would bring these kids from the street into our home. Their concern? What if these kids were from a lower caste or belonged to s*x workers? I would smile at them and say they’re my kids and that I would protect them till my last breath.”
The girls in the ashram are of varying ages - from 5 years to 25 years. A few of them are also intellectually challenged. But Pandeyji and his entire family look after all of them as their own. They’re given nutritious food, proper education, and a second chance at life. While a few of them have been married into good families, some have gone into higher studies or are nurses in renowned hospitals. While Narayan Seva Ashram has received a lot of acclaim and honour from the media, the state government, and even the locals, Hare Ram Pandey considers the success of his daughters as his biggest reward.
I want to give them a life full of happiness and joy, please support me
Hare Ram Pandey’s entire family has joined him in this mission to uplift countless abandoned girls in Jharkhand. His daughter-in-law’s mother donated her entire retirement settlement to help him build a home for these girls. Pandeyji sold his small piece of land too so that he can give his daughters the best of everything.
“I have always been very thankful for all the help I have received from well-wishers. If 5 people tried to create a problem, I have had 55 others come to my rescue. This is the power of kindness, it brings people together! I want to help many more in need, give them a better life - please support our cause.”
Narayan Seva Ashram is in need of groceries so that they can feed warm meals to the young girls living in their care. Even a small contribution from your side will make a big difference.
