Starving & Homeless, These Abandoned Elderly Have Faced Unimaginable Pain At The Hands Of Their Families

    Project

As Madhusudan* patiently waited on the shore, he kept looking around hoping to spot his family walking towards him to take him home. Hours passed, and then days, but they never came back. Madhusudan’s family had promised to pick him up after going to the market, but they were nowhere to be seen. After four long days without much food, passers-by realized that this elderly man needed help.

“That’s when he was brought here to our old age home. He was old and weak, but most of all devastated that he was abandoned by his own family. He cried uncontrollably that day telling us how he had supported them all his life, and they had left him all alone. But now, Madhusudan is the happiest he’s been. He says he’s found a family again and can live the rest of his life in peace.” - Vaibhav Tiwari, volunteer

Madhusudan’s story is not very different from the 65 other elderly living at Nirman Bharat Sanstha. They have all been considered a burden by their own and abandoned during the last years of their lives.

Unable To Watch Them Suffer Any Longer, Dietynand Left His Life In Delhi To Start This Old Age Home

Krishnanand, the founder of Nirman Bharat Sanstha, worked in Delhi and would visit his village in Jharkhand often. And every time he visited, he would see the elderly struggling to survive. Many of them were on the streets, starving, without warm clothes or shelter. One fine day, on one of his visits, Dietynand decided to leave his life in Delhi behind and start an old age home. Thus in 2017, Nirman Bharat Sanstha was formed.

“A lot of them from nearby villages have been abandoned by their own children, so they spend all their time alone, waiting for them to return. However, they almost never do. These people have no income and no family support. How will they survive? All the elderly people that live at our old age home are looked after and given all the essentials they need. I can see the joy on their faces as they eat all their meals together like one big family.” - Dietynand, Founder

While their own families never visit them, the elderly at Niram Bharat Sanstha receive visitors from nearby areas often who spend some time with them. The NGO gets a few donations in the way of funds or sometimes even bags of rice, but none of this is enough to continue looking after the elderly. They need consistent help.

You Can Lend Them A Helping Hand

After spending days and weeks without proper food, shelter or support, these 65 elderly people have finally found a safe and happy place. The atrocities that they have faced at the hands of their families are unimaginable, but thanks to Nirman Bharat Sanstha they won’t have to go through that again. However, they need your help to continue giving them the life they deserve.

Donate groceries to help them cook healthy meals for all the elderly at their old age home. With your support, they won’t have to worry any longer.
