Villages Of Sundarbans Need Your Help To Fight The Aftermath Of Cyclone Yaas
Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.
Project
Cyclone Yaas has devastated the Sundarbans, the marshy mangrove area in the delta of the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna in the Bay of Bengal. The Sundarbans are low-lying areas and the cyclone, which is considered to be worse than Amphan and Bulbul, have breached the embankments in almost 371 areas. The mud houses are broken down and the people don’t have access to the basic minimum resources.
Heartbreaking as it is, this sight and the suffering of the common people is nothing new to Jhumki Banerjee, Trustee and Secretary of Notun Jibon Foundation.
“Notun Jibon has been working relentlessly to help the people of Sundarbans. Their need is urgent. I have seen them wade through a waist length puddle of mud and water just to get a packet of muri (puffed rice). The sights will bring tears to your eyes…,” - Jhumki Banerjee.
About the foundation:
Founded by Arup Sengupta in 2017, Notun Jibon Foundation has been serving people since its inception. Their sole motto is to give people a second and a new chance at life, quite literal to their Foundation’s name.
What started off as a small blanket distribution drive on Christmas eve for the homeless in Kolkata, a few years ago, soon expanded into something much bigger. They’re now catering to 350+ homeless children, working in the red light area of Kalighat and Rashbehari area of Kolkata with s*x workers and their children. They also have a remedial school in the same area where they are teaching underprivileged children. That school however is closed now and is being used to cook food and feed those in need.
How are they helping now:
“Last year, during Amphan, we saw how the Sundarbans have been ravaged. The islands were submerged under water and the people there had lost all their livelihoods and had nothing to eat for weeks. The situation is no different now. We have been sending them groceries but it is not enough. We would need your help.”
Notun Jibon Foundation is requesting you to come forward so that they can reach out to more and more people in need. The remote villages of West Bengal are suffering, even a small contribution from your side will be of immense help.
