Project

Ek Aasha Chhoti Si is a small private initiative run by Orpita Ghosh in East Delhi where she cares for, feeds, treats, immunizes and manages the health of nearly 180 dogs, more than 45 cats and about 80-90 stray bovines largely including bulls & young abandoned male calves.

A typical day starts at around 4.30- 5 am when she and her husband depart for their first round of feeding followed by another late morning feed round – covering nearly 125 dogs. This is interspersed by calls and attending to sick, injured, young yet-t0-be-immunized dogs and pups which happens through the day. As the day progresses a many more batches of hungry, growling tummies – dogs, felines and finally bovines (cows and bulls) abandoned, destitute and left as stray – are tended to and fed – the balance nearly 120 odd animals are fed from afternoon to late at night.

The toughest challenge is that no two animals are alike – no two appetites are alike and no two eating preferences are like.. Orpita puts in a lot of effort and focus and is made by her to feed home cooked meals of Chicken, Rice and some milk from time to time, also fortified and supported with packaged foods like Pedigree, Chappi, Whiskas etc.

First it was the deadly winter chill and now the unrelenting cruel heat of the summer time, the family of these happy souls and wagging tales, and nodding horns – food sometimes isn’t enough.

Restrictions of the Covid pandemic have led to shortages in supply especially that of Chicken – Orpita has been doing a lot of the running around herself to procure food, medicines and supplies – trying to find the best deal, the most nutritious food and the battle continues.

To add to these immense ‘Care & Feed’ challenges are multiple daily trips and visits to the Veterinarian, or on-site visits of multiple paravets to locations across Mayur Vihar – there are many ongoing cases ranging from Buima [who is under prolonged treatment since Jan 2021 for multiple ailments and health issues], Kallumama, Jacky, Sweety, Dabbu, Badal, Nandu [A young bull twice attacked by acid], Dark Angel [a cat attacked and injured by dogs]... the list goes on and on

2. Animal Care Material – First Aid Kit material such as Cotton, Guazes and Bandages, Antiseptic ointments and sprays and medicines for all animal categories including dogs, cats, bovines and other animals, Essential medications for regular use from antibiotics to IV Fluids etc
