Story of the changemaker

In the small, unnamed alleys of India, real kindness thrives quietly and gracefully. Amidst the bustling chaos, strangers often extend compassion and assistance to those in need and this speaks volumes about how little it takes to bring a smile on tired faces. The village of Jamvadi in the Gondal taluk of Gujarat is home to one such kind-hearted soul who has been feeding hundreds of hungry people for the last 18 years. Along with his wife, Jaishree, Chandu Bapu has been cooking healthy meals for all those who can’t even afford a single meal.

An irreparable loss, a broken heart, and finally something that gave him a purpose

Chandu Bapu is now almost 70 years old but that hasn’t stopped him from serving those in need. Every day, he wakes up early in the morning and supervises the entire cooking process. While hundreds of chapatis are being made at a roti machine donated by a kind soul, they also have staff to help them cook khichdi, sabzi, kadhi, and other things. Chandu Bapu’s organisation, Osho Vishal Annshetra Trust, is a ray of hope for the poor and the helpless.

“18 years ago, when my son passed away in an unfortunate accident, I realised how precious life is and it’s important to spend time doing something valuable. My son left us without even a goodbye and the pain was incomparable. But that was also the time when I understood how essential it is to make the best use of our time in this world. That is how I started this feeding program,” - Chandu Bapu, Founder, Osho Vishal Annshetra Trust.

Since then, not a single day has passed when this man and his family didn’t feed the homeless, the abandoned, and the elderly. Chandu Bapu has a vehicle and by 10 AM in the morning, the van is loaded with freshly cooked meals stacked in tiffin carriers. He has a few regulars who depend fully on these meals - some of them are too old, some are all alone and some are challenged. These home-cooked meals from Chandu Bapu’s kitchen are their only source of happiness. Apart from this, the organisation also feeds all the poor and tired travelers who come to Chandu Bapu’s ashram by the side of the highway.

“On a daily basis, we feed around 300 people. It gives me great joy to watch them eat to their heart’s content. This has now become my passion and I want to continue feeding many more.”

You can donate to support Chandu Bapu’s mission

Talking about the difficulties, that they have been facing, Chandu Bapu says that the pandemic has reduced their donors by a large number. Even the donations they receive are not much. More often than not, they have to borrow from the shopkeepers to continue feeding those in need. Chandu Bapu and Jaishree didn’t even think twice before selling off her jewellery. But even then, it’s not enough.

“We need your help with groceries and a new food van that will make the distribution process easier and faster. We are also in need of tiffin carriers so that we can feed many more people. Even a small donation from your side will be of great help.”

This man in his 70s is defying all odds and working tirelessly to feed the hungry - you can be a source of support to him
