    Project

When disasters strike us, we’re all left stranded with no food, water, and sometimes are left scared and alone. Time and again, we’ve always seen the Sikh community and their selfless acts of kindness pour out to help people. Irrespective of the place, community, or situation, this community always comes forward to help.

When the lock-down was announced, they shut down their businesses and armed themselves to help humanity. The Sikhs term these acts of kindness as “Seva”. They’ve helped people who were stranded get back to their homes. When residents were tested positive and were quarantined, they helped provide food, water, clothes, and gave them a place to rest.

There are many humanitarians who we can take inspiration from. One such Mumbaikar is Viky Thomas, a humanitarian by heart.

Viky started his journey amid COVID-19 by offering voluntary services at Kalamboli Police Station. He helped them in patrolling. He also monitoring the crowd and vehicle movements using a drone. Slowly, he also got a call from Mumbai Police to assist with Drone surveillance at COVID hotspots in places like Dharavi.

During this time, he was introduced to the Sikh community while monitoring their Langar and ration activities. The Sikhs and their selfless nature of service to humanity are prevalent across the Globe. Viky was taken aback by their commitment and ideologies in their service to humanity.

He started by making videos of the Sikh community and helping others see the kind of work they do. Slowly, the Gurudwaras in Maharashtra opened their doors to ask Viky to spread the word.

Even though I was a catholic, I was never treated as an outside. They gave me love, respect, and honoured me for their services”, said Viky.

Viky stands with the Panvel Gurudwara. As part of their work towards fighting COVID-19, then they have been sanitizing the city and disinfecting apartments.

They have been cooking food for over three months and have more than 15,000 families in the last three months. They welcome anyone who needs a plate of food and serve them without any discrimination.

Today, they need your help to continue their humble work in providing food to thousands of families across Mumbai. This is the real spirit of Mumbai.

This is a spirit that can never be quashed. This is a spirit that says yes to Life. And Life never ends.
