Thousands Of Farmers In Unnao Have Lost Everything Due To Untimely Rains, Donate To Help Them

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

Untimely rainfall, and hailstorms coupled with strong winds in the last week of March destroyed wheat and mustard crops on 5000+ acres of land in Uttar Pradesh.  The states of Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan have also been affected by the untimely rains due to the western disturbances. The crops which were ready to be harvested the next day or in the coming week were completely destroyed leaving the farmers helpless.

These farmers are left with nothing - hopeless and heartbroken they don’t know what lies for them in the future

The heavy hailstorm has affected Unnao, Kanpur Dehat, Agra, Bareilly, Chandauli, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Prayagraj, and Varanasi districts in Uttar Pradesh. In Unnao itself, over 6000 farmers have incurred severe losses due to the rains.

Established on 15th June 2018, Shaan Foundation started its journey in the education domain where under Shaan IAS Coaching, they guide young aspirants towards a dignified future where they can become substantial contributors to our nation’s growth. It was during the COVID pandemic that they started supporting the poor and the underprivileged with food, medicines, masks, oxygen cylinders, etc

RIT Rural Foundation is the social startup started by Shaan Foundation which passionately runs numerous welfare initiatives for the underprivileged section of the country on education, healthcare, and livelihood with a special focus on women empowerment in rural India.

Talking about the plight of the farmers, Anurag Trivedi of RIT Rural Foundation says, “Landless farmers generally put all their savings from the previous crop in their next crop cycle and they survive on the price they get from the crop. Unforeseen events like this leave them with nothing. They are now struggling for even a single roti…”

While some of the fields have been fully submerged, the farmers have also started noticing fungal diseases in the crops as well. Anurag also pointed out that these farmers who live in Kutcha houses have lost their shelter too - the dangerous hailstorm has destroyed their thatched roofs.

“We are already under severe debt and now with this hailstorm which has covered fields after fields of wheat, we don’t know how to survive. ” - a distressed farmer from Uttar Pradesh.

You can support them in their hour of need

RIT Rural Foundation aims to help these 6000 farmers and many more in the Unnao district who have been tilling on leased land and need immediate support. This group of farmers also includes those who have very small land holdings and depend fully on agriculture.

“While we are working with the farmers to look at long-term solutions by helping them get crop insurance, enrolling them for government welfare schemes, and setting up small businesses for them the immediate need still is that of food. We want to give these families a month’s ration of aata, pulses, spices, and oil so that they can survive in these tough times,” - Anurah Trivedi.

Donate now and help thousands of farmers in Uttar Pradesh - every donation will save a life.
