The Victims Of Cyclone Nivar Need Your Help To Rebuild Their Lives

This year has been hard for everyone and recently, it got even harder for the people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and surrounding areas. Cyclone Nivar was predicted to be just a storm but quickly evolved into a major cyclonic storm that hit the coast of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh on the evening of 26th November.

An emergency alert was quickly declared and people were asked to stay indoors and stay safe. Puducherry saw the highest rainfall with 30 cms of rain in 24 hours. Other places like Chidambaram, Cuddalore, and the suburbs of Chennai witnessed heavy rainfall as well. In some places, winds reached speeds of 80-95 km/hr. The cyclonic storm is still growing and moving inwards, leaving destruction in its wake.

The power supply was cut, emergency personnel were deployed, and hundreds of thousands of citizens fled to emergency shelters in the dead of night, leaving behind everything. The cyclone has uprooted trees, destroyed power lines, and even levelled huts and makeshift houses. Many places experienced flash floods that swept away homes.

For a lot of people currently in shelters, there is nowhere to go back to. Their homes have been destroyed. Many families are now dealing with major structural damage to their homes along with flooding and the on-going Coronavirus pandemic. In all this chaos, they need your support to rebuild their lives and continue onwards.

Countless homeless people, the destitute, the elderly, and the poor were unable to evacuate. They are now stranded in waterlogged areas with no access to electricity, drinking water, and food. They too need our support to survive these trying times. 

While many people on the ground are rushing to provide aid, they cannot do this alone. We need to step up and help in these times of trouble. Men, women, and children are facing a natural disaster in the midst of a global pandemic- you can help them rebuild their lives and their homes and keep them safe.
