An Orphan Herself, Yojana Has Now Vowed To Look After Countless Abandoned Elderly Like Her Own

“Until the parents are independent and can help their children however they can, they’re considered a part of the family. Once they start getting old and dependent, their own sons and daughters consider them a burden. They don’t even think twice before abandoning them by the side of the road. We find them in horrible conditions and try our best to give them the life they deserve,” - Yojana Gharat, Founder, SMIT Foundation.  

Established in 2010 in Boisar in Palghar district of Maharashtra, this NGO has been working day and night to uplift the poor and needy, the ones who have been abandoned, and those who are suffering from disabilities. 

For over 20 years now, Yojana is the ray of hope for hundreds of elderly in need 

Yojana has been working tirelessly to help provide a home and shelter to destitute senior citizens who had nowhere else to go. SMIT Old Age Home and Care Foundation is home to 85+ seniors who are completely dependent on her. Both Yojana’s daughters, Vrushali and Mayuri, are actively involved in the foundation and oversee various aspects of its functioning.  

“I had grown up in the Missionaries Of Charity, Kolkata, and while l always had the teachings of  Mother Teresa to guide me, I knew the pain of growing up without the love and affection of your own family. That has been my primary motivation for supporting all those who are all alone in this world.”  

Today, all the seniors living there are her extended family. She takes care of all of them as her own and works hard every day to give them a better life than they had before. For them, she is a ray of hope during their darkest times. Yojana ensures that the residents get nutritious food, proper medicines, and a life of dignity free from abuse and torture.
