Saju Is Spreading Smiles To Thousands In Need By Giving Them Clothes, Help Him

    Project

Saju Talukdar is a known name around Dimdima tea garden in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal. Not only because he is a trusted driver but also because of his kind-hearted nature. This 50 YO has been bringing smiles to the faces of thousands of people for more than a decade by giving them clothes to wear.

“The poverty in the tea gardens will bring tears to your eyes. Families of four survive on a meager salary and buying new clothes is nothing short of luxury for these workers. But that doesn’t mean that they should live their lives in tattered rags. For the last few years, I have been trying to change that by giving them clothes in good condition. Seeing them happy makes my day,” - Saju Talukdar, Founder, Bir Birsa Munda Cloth Bank (BBMC).

People spend thousands on new clothes and these unfortunate ones hardly have enough to maintain their dignity

Born to humble parents, Saju has seen poverty and suffering up close. He recalls how he was forced to drop out of school because his tailor father was too poor to afford a new uniform. While he has now been working as a commercial driver for the last few years and earning a decent income, Saju has not forgotten the people with whom he has grown up.

“During my multiple rides around Alipurduar, Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri, I saw so many people in need of food and clothes. They live by the side of the roads in horrible conditions. I have always wanted to help them and thus I started collecting old clothes in good condition from all those who wanted to donate. That was the start of Cloth Bank.”

Initially, people didn’t believe him - they wondered if Saju would actually give these clothes to the needy. But then they saw his dedication. The Cloth Bank started at his home but now he picks up used clothes in his car on his way back home from his trips. These days, he puts up a Facebook status to tell them where he would be and they hand him over the clothes.

“I distribute these clothes at Bandapani, Ramjhora, Red Bank, Kathalguri, Dimdima, and other closed tea plantations, besides railway stations and bus stops. I arrange the clothes in stacks and then ask the people to choose from them. We have also given them blankets and quilts in the cold winters.”

These old clothes might mean nothing to you but they can make someone smile

Saju Talukdar, his family, and his close friends have dedicated their lives to the poor and needy in the remote villages of North Bengal. He has been giving clothes to over 3000-4000 people in need. He needs your support to make the upcoming festive season a special one for those who have nothing.

With a constant smile on his face, Saju wants to give people one of their basic necessities - clothes. He has also started a small shelter home where there are around 25 people who have nowhere to go. He feeds them and looks after their medical needs.

“It is true that there are many people who are in need but it is also true that with little kindness, we can make huge differences. The Durga Puja is near and everyone wants to celebrate the festival by wearing new clothes. But what about the poor - is it not their festival?  I request all of you to support my cause and help me give these underprivileged people the life they deserve.”

You can donate clothes to Saju’s Cloth Bank and bring back the smiles on thousands of faces.
