“One day a boy was brought in who was abused and left to die on the roadside on a cold winter night. He was rescued by the police and brought to the shelter home that I worked in. He couldn’t speak, so he couldn’t tell us what happened to him. He was scared and covered in several wounds. We soon realised he was a child with special needs, but the shelter I was working at then didn’t want to take him in because of this. A month later, this young boy passed away. That’s when I knew I had to do something to help children like him. They deserve better.” - Courtney Lalotra, Co-Founder, Samarpan Trust
Courtney then started Samarpan Trust along with her husband Yogesh, to help underprivileged children and economically disadvantaged families receive the help they need. For years now, she has been helping children get the love, care and opportunities they deserve.
Courtney Has Been Rescuing Abandoned Children For A Decade
Courtney came to India in 2010 and fell in love with the country and its people. A graduate from Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, Courtney decided to stay back in India and moved into a slum in north Delhi to work with street and orphaned children. She was lovingly called ‘didi’ by everyone, and continued working here until she decided to start Samarpan Trust after the heartbreaking incident of losing the abandoned child with special needs.
Through Samarpan Trust’s various projects, Courtney and Yogesh help hundreds of children every day, because of which they’re given a safe home, basic essentials and access to good education. Their projects include a home for boys with special needs who are rescued from abusive and neglectful situations, daycare and education center for children of migrant families, educational programs for girls so that they get access to quality education, daycare for girls with special needs, women’s empowerment initiative and covid relief efforts during the pandemic.
“All of these children have been through unbelievable pain and trauma. Most of them have had no access to even the most essential items. I want to give them the best chance of a bright future.”
However, Now They Face Challenges
Courtney has been responsible for rescuing and rehabilitating so many children, but the pandemic has made it difficult for her to continue the projects that are so close to her heart. Keeping these children safe, healthy and active form some of the core principles of Samarpan’s vision.
“We want to create a world where every person is provided basic necessities and given equal opportunities to live a dignified life. Now I need your help to do this.”
Your support will help the children at Samarpan Trust get nutritious meals which will help them recover and stay healthy, and stationery material which will help them continue studying and learning.
