“Lakshmi and I were inseparable. Together we had a great time in the forest, plucking fruits, enjoying the wind or simply taking a bath in the river. But little did I know that this is not going to last forever. My father got transferred to a different place and two years later when I came back to the same place, I was heartbroken to know that Lakshmi was no more,” - Dr. Kushal Konwar Sarma.
Lakshmi was an elderly elephant who succumbed to her injuries - there was no good veterinarian to be found in this remote village of Assam who could treat her back to health. This incident was the driving force for Dr Sarma to become a veterinarian and save the lives of animals, especially elephants, in danger.
This dedicated doctor hasn’t had a weekly off in over 35 years
Fondly called “The Elephant Doctor Of India’, Dr Sarma has been instrumental in working with around 700 elephants every year. He has never taken a single day off - he truly is passionate about the work he does.
He is the pioneer of the remote tranquilising injection technique in the North East and has used this technique to rescue 139 rogue jumbos and treat hundreds of captive and injured elephants over the years. Dr Sarma has contributed to the conservation of the Asian Elephants in India. He also holds a world record for this feat.
“I get calls from all parts of the country asking me to help injured or sick elephants. Some of the cases break my heart. Very recently, I came to know to a female elephant who had bit on a pressure bomb and her lower jaw was blown to pieces. I don’t know how much time I would have before I get to save her. Not many are aware of the needs of these animals and so something as simple as indigestion in older elephants kills them because their owners don’t know how to care for them.”
Dr Sarma is working closely with NGOs to help reduce the elephant-human conflicts by spreading awareness and ensuring that these animals are not harmed in the process. Elephants are highly sensitive and social animals - getting separated from their herd traumatizes them and eventually at a later age they end up turning rogue.
Despite over 20 near-death experiences, Dr Sarma is determined to work for the elephants
The job of a veterinarian and rescuer is not easy and it often puts the person in a lot of risks. A rogue male elephant in ‘musth’ (literally translated to ‘intoxication) is very aggressive and has an increased level of reproductive hormones. They are capable of doing a lot of harm if not tackled in the most efficient way.
“There have been more than 20 instances when I have had near death experiences. But I wouldn’t change anything about my work. I have dedicated my entire life to them and want to save as many elephants as I can. But I would require your help for that.”
Dr Sarma is requesting you to come forward and donate generously for a vehicle on which he can travel longer distances to save injured and sick elephants and medicines and fruits for the elephants. Your donation is sure to make a difference.
About Dr KK Sarma: Over 60 YO, this veterinarian from Assam has dedicated his life for the care of sick and injured elephants and now needs your help to look after them.
