Nisha Wants To Help Hundreds Of Elders Who Have Been Abandoned By Their Own, Join Her

Abused and abandoned, India still has countless senior citizens who have nowhere to go. Their last days are spent on the streets with no food or shelter. So many of them make bus stands, and railway stations their home - in the extremes of weather, they sleep on empty stomachs often without any proper clothing on them. Snehakoodu Abhayamandiram is a home for these people who are helpless and have no one to look after them. 

19 YO Nisha was moved at the sight of a hungry old beggar and started feeding her from her own pockets. For someone, who has seen poverty and suffering up close, Nisha had always wanted to support those in need.  

In 2015, Nisha Snehakoodu started her own shelter home for the old and abandoned in Kottayam. Currently, they have around 50 residents in their care and have helped rehabilitate over 180 senior citizens back to their own families. 

“We get phone calls from various people, sometimes the police too and we rush to rescue these people who live in horrible conditions. Hungry and tired, these mothers and fathers tear up when we carry them back to our home. Some of them tell us how their own sons and daughters abused them for their property. Hearing this, I think that this is not what their life should be and I try my best to help them,” - Nisha Snehakoodu, Founder, Snehakoodu Abhayamandiram.  

The elderlies are given a life of respect and care without them having to worry about money. The shelter home takes care of their diet, medicines, and other daily needs completely free of cost. 

“Some of them are bedridden and need special care, we look after them as well. Their medical and nutritional needs are different and we try to give them the best. Several well-wishers have joined us over the years and supported our cause but the need is ever-increasing.”

Living on the streets, these senior citizens face the utmost difficulties. Weak and helpless, they don’t know who to go to for a morsel of food. You can change that.
