Selvaraj’s dedication towards helping underprivileged children shines bright every day. Synthika Trust was started in Trichy District, Tamil Nadu, as a way to give children with intellectual disabilities the chance at a better future, and today it has grown to be so much more - it’s a safe place where they’re not made to feel different or incapable, it’s a place they can call home.

They’ve Struggled To Get Even Chairs & Tables For The Children

Synthika Trust is a residential school for children with intellectual disabilities, visual impairments and hearing impairments. Here they’re given the right kind of support they need - from physiotherapy and speech therapy to healthy food and special education. All the children are given physical, psychological and emotional care and are equipped with life skills. They’re also given regular medical check-ups. While the Trust does so much for the 45 children at their school, none of these is without its fair share of challenges.

“Many of these children come from single-parent households where their mother is the sole breadwinner of the family. Under these circumstances, it’s almost impossible for her to afford the child’s education. These children come from nothing, and it breaks our hearts that despite our best efforts, sometimes we struggle to look after them. There have been days when we didn’t even have chairs and tables for them to sit on until a kind donor came forward to help.”

The winters and monsoons are especially difficult for them. Due to extreme weather, the children often fall sick and even suffer from seizures. They struggle to keep the room warm due to leakages and are left with plenty of repair work and medical expenses as well.

“These children deserve the best of everything, but due to lack of support, we can’t give them so many of the amenities they need. Sometimes we can’t even afford the basics. They’ve been through a lot and have faced immense stigma and discrimination because of their disabilities.”

The 10 staff members at Synthika Trust work day and night to look after these kids. Selvaraj’s aim is to make them self-sufficient and independent - physically and economically. And for this, he needs your support. Donate groceries, hygiene products, medicines and mattresses to give 45 helpless underprivileged kids a better life.
