“That one trip to Goa in 2000 changed my perspective completely and gave me a purpose for life. I left my successful business in the UK and decided to devote all my time to the care of abandoned and injured animals,”- Atul Sarin, Founder, Welfare For Animals In Goa (WAG).
For the last 20 years, Atul has been involved in animal welfare and has been rescuing thousands of animals in Goa with the help of a dedicated team of volunteers and animal lovers.
“For someone like me who has been doing this for over 2 decades, you’d think there is nothing that can shock me but each time we get a call for a rescue it breaks my heart to see these voiceless animals in such terrible conditions.”
You can’t help but wince in pain when Atul shares the story of Beauty - a poor pup who accidentally fell into a hot tar mix on the roadside. When she arrived at the WAG Shelter, she was squealing out of pain. It took a team of 8 people and 3 hours to clean her completely. The traumatised little animal has now found a safe home at the shelter. Happier days lie ahead of her. There are many more out there who need help, innocent animals who have been suffering without any fault of their own. Atul and his entire team are working day and night for them.
WAG is the only animal shelter in Goa that takes in all kinds of animals in need of help
WAG was established in 2005 and currently takes care of 120 animals on a daily basis. These range from turkeys, chickens, goats, dogs, cats, cows & other birds. They rescue somewhere around 500 injured cattle every year. Most of them have been abandoned and were forced to look for food on the busy streets of Goa. Being hit by a speeding car and fracturing one of their limbs is common for these animals. WAG becomes a ray of hope for them. With proper medicine and care, these animals get better in this sanctuary located in Siolim, North Goa.
“We have recently started a sanctuary for rabbits too - we have started bringing them in severely abused conditions and also plan to get them neutered in due time.”
Apart from the animals in their shelter, WAG also feeds hundreds of stray dogs on the beaches of Goa. Atul says, while neutering them and giving them a safe home is the ultimate goal, feeding nutritious meals to these starving strays is the first step in this direction. These dogs are mostly dependent on the scraps the shacks on the beach feed them and with the beaches being closed with the upcoming monsoons, they’re left with no choice but to starve. Atul needs your help to continue this feeding program.
These animals deserve a life of happiness, donate to make that happen
“We are not just a sanctuary for the animals in our care but a fully functional vet clinic too. Our experienced vets and para-vets work tirelessly to save the lives of severely injured animals on a daily basis. So, besides, nutritious food for our animals, we would also need your help with medicines.”
WAG is a safe place for hundreds of animals. After living a harsh life on the streets, they have finally found a place where they can rest and heal. Atul and his team are selflessly serving these innocent animals - every donation you make will make a huge difference.
