They’re Abandoned Due To Their Illness, Help Them Get The Love & Care They Deserve

“A man we once rescued was reunited with his family after 35 years! When he later called me from his village, he told me how everyone was so happy that we had helped him find his family again. That is the power of the work we do, and why I wake up every day determined to help as many people as possible.” - Mohammed Rafi, Founder, Anbagam

Kind, loving and empathetic, Mohammed Rafi doesn’t let a day go by without doing everything he can to make a difference in someone’s life. His tireless efforts have helped hundreds of people with mental illnesses over the years - what started as a small initiative of helping people by giving them shelter in his house has now grown to three shelter homes. People with mental illnesses who have been abandoned, are lost or have no one to look after them find a safe home with him.

Starving & Homeless, They’re Found In The Saddest Conditions

It all began in 1999 when Rafi saw a man sitting below the Gemini flyover in Chennai. While he felt bad for his plight, it was only after seeing him continuously for a few days that he realised he
    needed help urgently.

“His beard and hair were unkempt, he was wearing torn clothes and by the looks of it, it looked like he was suffering from some mental illness. I didn’t want to leave him there because it was evident he had been through a lot. So I took him home and give him food and shelter. That’s when I realised that this is my life’s path. They’re found in such sad conditions and I just want to ensure they’re given a comfortable life and better yet, reunited with their families.”

Rafi then started Anbagam in Chennai to rescue and rehabilitate people with mental illnesses. Today, he has over 400 people in 3 shelters. Whenever they rescue someone in need, they try their best to get whatever little details they can about the person’s family and loved ones. With this, they go above and beyond to try and reunite the residents with their families. At Anbagam, the residents’ every need is looked after -  food, shelter, hygiene, medicines and a lot more.

However, with the increasing number of people, Rafi needs your help to ensure that they are all looked after well, with the respect and dignity they deserve. He can’t do it by himself any longer.

You Can Help Rafi On His Mission To Uplift People With Mental Illnesses

“There is so much stigma attached to mental illness. A lot of people end up being abandoned by their own families because they don’t want anything to do with them or don’t have the means to look after them. People with mental illnesses need all the help they can get. And having a support system can go a long way in ensuring they’re on the path to recovery.”

Mohammed Rafi now needs your support to get grocery kits and hygiene kits so that he can look after the residents better and give them the holistic care that they need. Rafi has been selfless and tireless in his mission and your contribution will ensure he continues working towards this cause.
