Hundreds Of Kids With Hearing Impairment Have A Better Life Because Of Dr. Babu

“I had seen my brother suffer because of his disabilities. Society doesn’t treat them as equals. There is always some discrimination. It is heartbreaking to see that just because they are not like others they will be forced to be treated as a burden. I have always wanted to change that. I wanted to give them a life of respect and dignity,” - Dr. D.P.K. Babu. Founder, Ashray-Akruti. 

Ashray Akruti started its first special school in Hyderabad in the year 1996 with just five children. Today, the organization implements health, education, and skill development projects in the area of disability with a special focus on hearing impairment. They have not only changed the lives of thousands in need for more than 2 decades but also given them a better future. 

With over 16 projects across Hyderabad, this NGO is giving children with disabilities the life they deserve  

Mr. Babu is an educationist who believes in a truly inclusive education system. He has brought several innovative methods in educating the hearing Impaired which has resulted in mainstreaming many hearing-impaired children into regular schools. He believes in unique methods like the Oral Aural teaching method and auditory verbal Method to develop speech and language for those who cannot hear. The main aim of Ashray Akruti is to empower those from disadvantaged backgrounds suffering from disabilities. They not only educate them and look after their medical needs but also help them stand on their feet.  

“Imagine living a life where you’re unable to hear the birds chirping or the sweet sound of music. These children feel constantly left out and have to struggle extra hard to make their mark. At our shelter homes, we want to give them the opportunity that they deserve. We have students at our schools who have completed their studies and pursued engineering - some of them have been enrolled in our multimedia courses and are working towards a brighter future.” 

But probably the best success stories are those when kids like Doleshwari, start to hear and speak with proper care and treatment at Ashray-Akruti. The NGO is also working tirelessly to spread awareness about hearing impairment and how parents can recognise it at an early stage. Kanchan, from Ashray Akruti tells us how more and more parents, even from rural India, want to give their challenged child a happy life and therein lies the success of Ashray Akruti.

Currently, Ashray-Akruti is looking after 650 children in total, and in one of their shelters, they have 100 children staying with them. They need help with providing them with nutritional diets, hearing aids, and medical equipment for the clinics they have across Hyderabad.
