Project
Imagine a place where all animals roam freely, where they’re not confined in cages or forced to live in fear of humans. A place where they’re safe, given unconditional love and spend their final years in peace and comfort. This is a reality for over 600+ rescued animals at the Kalote Animal Trust’s sanctuary in Maharashtra. Dogs, cats, birds, donkeys, cattle and more make up this big family on this beautiful four and a half-acre of land.
“All animals here are rescued from terrible conditions. So many of them have been left to die on the streets, some are victims of abuse and hit-and-run cases and some are even abandoned by their owners because of their illness or age. Once we bring them here, we help them recover. Some of the animals are released into the wild or adopted, but most of them end up living here permanently. This is their forever home.” - Sameer Vohra, Founder, Kalote Animal Trust
In the last two years alone, Sameer has seen a huge increase in the number of animals at the sanctuary. While he’s doing his best to look after all of them, it isn’t easy without support.
Hurt & Terrified, These Animals Hold On To Sameer To Feel Safe
When Sameer moved to Lonavala from Florida in 2002, little did he know that animal rescue and rehabilitation would become his whole life.
“Every animal is special, and every animal that comes here has a story. I remember the St Bernard I had found tied to a lampost. He was only 20 kgs, severely underweight for a dog of his breed. I don’t know how many days he was left there, but it took us a year to bring him back to normal again. I can't explain the joy that brought me. When I first started rescuing animals, nearly two decades ago, there were no sanctuaries in Lonavala. I would take them to the vet and ensure they’re treated. As more people found out about me, I started getting more rescue calls and I just knew I couldn’t stop.”
Sameer left his successful career behind to dedicate all his time to these animals. He does everything for them - he feeds them, gives them medicines and even cleans them. Sameer is the happiest when he’s around them and finds the courage to make it through even the most challenging times. However, running an animal sanctuary, especially with so many different animals with different needs, is no easy feat.
Old, Injured, Challenged, Abandoned - This Sanctuary Is A Safe Home For Them All
No matter what the condition of the animal is, Sameer opens his sanctuary’s doors to all of them. And he wants to continue rescuing them with your support. With the increasing number of animals, he not only has to ensure they need more food and medicines but that hygiene standards are maintained.
“By donating food, medicines and cleaning supplies you will be helping all these animals survive. We need to maintain good hygiene for them, and a lot of our funds go into procuring cleaning materials. So far we’ve been managing with support from a few wellwishers, but it’s just not enough. 600+ animals rely on me for their survival. I can’t let them down.”
Sameer also needs your help in getting a vehicle so that they can rescue larger animals comfortably. They currently have a small vehicle which can carry dogs, cats and other animals of that size, but it isn’t sufficient for cattle, horses and others.
Your support will help 600+ animals continue living a comfortable, safe and healthy life.
