All Alone In A New City, This Mother Is Struggling To Afford Her Baby’s Life-Saving Procedure

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

Madhumita Ghosh was holding her crying one-year-old baby, Diya, in her arms and thinking about how long the little one would be in pain. They had been on the way to Bangalore for hours - it was their only hope for Diya's treatment. Madhumita couldn't leave her daughter's side for even a second. Her husband Mithun could not travel due to his illness, so this mother was on her own, handling everything.

“When we finally reached Bangalore last week, I was relieved we made it in time. But now I have to worry about affording the procedure that she needs. I can’t help but think about my husband too, I don’t know what we’ve done to deserve this - both the people I love the most are in so much pain. But there is hope for Diya, she can get better,” says Madhumita with hope in her eyes.

Madhumita prays every day that her youngest daughter makes it and she’s able to take her back to their home in Nadia, West Bengal soon. However, this can only be possible with procedure as soon as possible.

Her Swollen Stomach Causes Her So Much Pain, She Cries Every Day

Diya was only 3 days old when she had to have urgent procedure for her condition Hirschsprung's disease. This condition affects the large intestine (or colon) and occurs when certain nerve cells, called ganglion cells, are missing from parts of the colon. These nerve cells help control the muscle movements that propel stool through the intestines.

In simpler terms, it's like having a section of the "tube" that moves poop through your body missing some of its control buttons. Because of that, the affected part of the intestine can't push stool along properly, leading to problems like constipation and a swollen belly.

“There have been times when she wasn’t able to pass stool for almost five days. She was so uncomfortable and kept tossing and turning every time I tried to comfort her. At least we can express our pain, she can’t even do that. So all she does is cry.”

Diya needs the procedure as soon as possible but with her father Mithun’s condition and inability to work consistently, the family has little to no income. Madhumita and Mithun also have their two older daughters to look after. With nothing left to afford Diya’s procedure, they worry every day.

They Can’t Even Afford To Buy Meals, Let Alone Her Procedure

Mithun calls Madhumita every other hour to check on Diya. It breaks his heart that he can’t be with them during this time. Madhumita tries to stay positive, but it’s hard for her to do so when they can hardly afford the canteen food at the hospital.

“I’ve been staying with her in the hospital since we’ve come here, and it hasn’t been easy. We need 14 lakh to ensure she gets procedure, but how can we do that when we can’t even afford meals anymore?”

Madhumita is counting on your support to save her daughter Diya from this condition. Your contribution can help Diya get the necessary procedure and medicines, and stay in the PICU to recover. Please donate to help give her a chance at a healthy future.
