She Is The Daughter They Wished For, Help Geetha Look After Countless Elderly In Need

    Project

Geetha Shetty has been serving the abandoned and the helpless in and around Mangalore for the last 10 years. Born into a philanthropic family, Geetha grew up watching her mother go out of her way to help others in need, feed the poor, and support those who have no one.

“I studied in a convent school in Belgaum and we would often visit orphanages and old age homes as a part of our school’s extracurricular activities. So both my upbringing and my schooling instilled in me this desire to uplift those in need. Today when I see the 40 residents in my care, it fills my heart with joy. This is what I wish to do for the rest of my life,” - Geetha R. Shetty, Director, Sevaashrama.

This old age home has made many abandoned mothers happy in their final years

Geetha recalls the day when she resolved to help the elderly. She was on one of her regular visits to an orphanage when someone told her about an old man who has been living in the local bus stand for the last three days.

“I wanted to help him and took him to many old age homes but no one was ready to take him in without a huge deposit. How can serving others in times of need have a price, I thought. I drove that man to his home in a village 2 hours away from Mangalore and spoke to his family as well. It was while I was coming back when I decided that I need to help people like him.

This was in 2013 and Geetha started with 2 residents and now there are 39 abandoned mothers and one old man living in her care. All of them have been rescued from terrible conditions. Some were forced to live on the roads and eat dog food for months before Geetha brought her in while others were forced to leave their hometown to escape being tortured at the hands of their family members.

“It is heartbreaking when they share their stories. Initially, they’re scared and shy but as time passes, they start trusting me and that’s when I get to know what all they had to face at this age! Here at Sevaashrama, we are all a big family. We take care of their dietary needs, their medical needs and treat them like our own family members.”

Geeta wishes to build another old age home solely for abandoned and old men. While she has already started the construction for the same using up her own savings, there is so much more to do. Putting sheets on the top floor, laying tiles on the terrace, and putting hollow blocks outside are some of their primary requirements.

She also needs a van that will help her in rescuing many more in need. Finally, she needs help with daily groceries and hygiene products to ensure that the 40 residents have a comfortable life.

You can help her make a huge difference

Geetha is like the daughter these 40 residents have always wanted in their lives. Loving, caring, and understanding, this woman is filling up their final years with happiness and respect. Geetha wants to give a safe home to many more abandoned elderly. You can help her in her mission by making a donation. This is your chance to make a real difference.
